HAAS Initiative

Homeless Assistance & Support

More than 7,000 individuals in Maryland are without stable housing — including approximately 575 veterans. Beatrice Loving Heart formed an advocacy group dedicated to connecting those individuals with the services, shelter, and support they need to regain stability and move forward.

The need

Why This Work Matters

Homelessness is not just a housing problem — it is a health crisis, a mental health challenge, and a community concern all at once. Beatrice Loving Heart believes that no one should face those challenges without support. Our HAAS team works directly with homeless individuals to help them access the services and stability they deserve.

Accessing a shelter is often the first step toward lasting change. When individuals reach safe shelter, four important things become possible:

  • A stable foundation that opens pathways to recovery.
  • Access to substance abuse treatment and recovery programs.
  • The chance to pursue personal goals and restore a sense of self-worth.
  • Employment opportunities and a path toward self-sufficiency.

Our approach

Our Five-Part Approach

BLH's HAAS initiative takes a whole-person view of homelessness. We address the connected needs that keep people from regaining stability, working through five areas of support:

Housing Assistance
Facilitating transitions into stable community housing for those without a safe place to live.
Healthcare Integration
Connecting individuals with medical, behavioral, and psychological services to support recovery and reduce the cycle of crisis.
Education Promotion
Encouraging enrollment in educational programs that build skills, confidence, and long-term opportunity.
Employment Support
Partnering with local businesses to create meaningful job opportunities for individuals rebuilding their lives.
Criminal Justice Prevention
Providing emergency relief funding to reduce law enforcement contact and help individuals stay on a positive path.
